You have both an Echo and a Google Home in the same room. Alexa says something, and Google Assistant responds. Or worse, the Echo asks a question, the Google Home interprets the audio as its wake word, and both speakers start responding in chaos. This is voice assistant cross-talk and it gets more common as households add devices from multiple ecosystems.
Why this happens
Voice assistants are tuned to wake on a specific phrase: “Alexa”, “Hey Google”, “Hey Siri”. The phrases are designed to be distinct, but they are not always distinct enough. “Echo” can sound like “Echo” to a different Echo across the room. “Hey Siri” can be misheard as “Hey series” by Google’s parser when speech recognition is uncertain.
When one assistant speaks a phrase that another interprets as a wake word, the second assistant wakes up. If both then speak, you get cascading wakes.
The clean fix: change the wake word
Each ecosystem allows you to choose from a small set of wake words:
- Alexa: “Alexa”, “Amazon”, “Echo”, “Computer”, “Ziggy”
- Google Home: “Hey Google”, “OK Google”. Limited choice.
- Siri: “Hey Siri”, or “Siri” alone on iOS 17+. Limited choice.
If your Echo is interfering with your Google Home, change the Echo’s wake word to something less likely to be picked up by the Google parser. “Computer” and “Ziggy” are good choices.
To change Alexa’s wake word: open the Alexa app, More, Settings, Device Settings, your device, Wake Word, select a different word.
The dual-assistant problem
If you have devices that support both Alexa and Google Assistant (some Sonos speakers, some smart displays), enabling both on the same device guarantees cross-talk. The device’s microphone hears both wake words and tries to route to both.
Pick one. Disable the other. The compromise of giving up one ecosystem is usually less painful than the chaos of running both.
The TV problem
TV ads and shows say “Alexa” or “Hey Google” with surprising frequency. Voice assistants near the TV wake on these.
Solutions:
- Move the speaker further from the TV
- Enable Voice ID on Alexa so it only responds to recognized voices (significantly reduces TV-triggered false wakes)
- Lower the speaker’s wake word sensitivity in the app
- For known problem ads, mute the microphone temporarily
Distance and acoustic separation
If two voice assistants are within 4 feet of each other, cross-talk is almost guaranteed. Move them apart. If they must be in the same room, place them on opposite walls with soft furnishings (rugs, curtains, sofas) between them to absorb sound.
The general rule: 10 feet apart with normal furnishings is usually enough to prevent most cross-talk.
The Siri-on-watch issue
If you wear an Apple Watch with Hey Siri active, the watch can wake when you say things that resemble “Hey Siri”. The watch’s microphone is right by your face, so it picks up more than the room speakers do.
You can disable Hey Siri on the watch (Settings, Siri, Listen for, off). Then activate Siri on the watch by raising your wrist or by long-pressing the digital crown.
Different bands
If you have multiple Echos and only some of them suffer cross-talk with your TV, the difference may be Wi-Fi band. Speakers on the same band have similar latency to Amazon’s cloud and may all respond to the same trigger. Speakers on different bands have slight latency differences that can cause some to drop out of the response group.
Not actionable in most cases, but useful to understand: a behavior that affects only some of your speakers might trace to network differences rather than acoustic differences.
The do-not-disturb workaround
If cross-talk happens at specific times (evening when TV is on), use Do Not Disturb mode on the affected speakers. DND suppresses notifications and some routines but does not disable wake word response, so this is a partial fix at best.
The mute toggle
When watching a particularly trigger-heavy show, mute the speaker temporarily. The physical mute button on Echos turns off the microphone entirely. Press again to unmute.
This is the most reliable workaround for known-bad TV content but requires you to remember to mute and unmute.
Voice ID limits false wakes
Alexa’s Voice ID feature only responds to recognized voices when configured. Training Voice ID for the household members and excluding all others significantly reduces false wakes from TV, radio, and other audio.
Setup: Alexa app, More, Settings, Your Profile & Family, Voice ID. Each household member trains their voice. After training, in device settings, enable “Only respond to recognized voices” if available.
Different ecosystems in different rooms
The cleanest household setup is to commit to one ecosystem per room. The kitchen is Alexa. The bedroom is Google. The living room is Siri. Each speaker is the only voice assistant within earshot of its room.
This eliminates cross-talk because the assistants are physically separated. The downside is users have to remember which ecosystem responds in which room.
When to give up on one ecosystem
If you keep running into cross-talk and the workarounds feel intrusive, consider whether you really need two ecosystems. Most users who have both started with one and gradually added the other for a specific feature. Often the second is rarely used and the cross-talk cost exceeds the benefit.
Audit which ecosystem you actually use for what. If 90% of your voice usage is one ecosystem, removing the other is a reasonable simplification.
The household-rule shortcut
For households with both Alexa and Google Home, the cleanest cross-talk solution is the household rule: each room has only one voice assistant, and family members learn which room responds to which trigger. The cognitive cost is small after a week, and the cross-talk disappears.

The volume-step trick during television
When watching shows that frequently say wake words (Alexa-named characters in TV ads especially), preemptively reduce the smart speaker volume to one. The speaker still wakes but the response is inaudible. After the show, restore volume. This sidesteps the cross-talk without disabling the speaker entirely.
