Your smart home app received an update. After updating, you discover settings are gone. Routines you had configured are missing. Device names you customized are back to defaults. The update was supposed to be transparent but it reset things. This is rare but happens, and recovery depends on whether the data was account-side or device-side.
Account-side versus device-side
Most smart home apps store data both in the cloud (account-side) and on your phone (device-side).
Account-side data:
- Routines
- Device list and names
- Integrations with third-party services
- Voice profiles
Device-side data:
- Local app preferences (theme, layout)
- Cached recent activity
- Local-only quick actions
An app update typically affects device-side data. Account-side data persists across app updates.
If account-side data is lost
If your routines or device names are gone, the cloud may be the issue. Verify by logging into the manufacturer’s website with the same account. Look at your devices and routines online.
If the web shows them, the data is intact and the app is just not showing it. Force-quit and restart the app.
If the web also does not show them, the data was actually deleted server-side. Contact support immediately; cloud data deletion is unusual and may be recoverable from backup.
If device-side data is lost
If only local preferences are gone (theme, widget layout), the app’s local storage was cleared during update. This is sometimes intentional (the new version uses a different storage format) and sometimes a bug.
Reconfigure the device-side preferences. The data may not be recoverable.
Check for known issues
If an update is reported to lose data, the developer may have published a known issue. Check the app’s update notes, support forum, or status page.
If it is a known issue, the developer may release a patch quickly. Wait if possible.
The two-app conflict
If you have two apps from the same manufacturer (a legacy app and a newer one), they may interact. Updates to one may affect the other.
Use only one app per manufacturer if possible. Uninstall the legacy app.
The OS upgrade interaction
If you also recently upgraded your phone OS, the combination of OS upgrade and app update can be problematic. The app may have been forced to upgrade due to OS changes and lost data in the process.
Wait for the next app update which usually fixes this kind of issue.
Recover from local backup
If your phone has a recent backup (iCloud, Google Backup) from before the update, restoring from backup recovers the app’s pre-update state.
This is invasive (restoring affects your whole phone, not just the app) and usually overkill. Reserve for catastrophic losses.
Check the app for export functions
Some apps offer settings export. Use it regularly so you have a recent file to import if needed.
Apps with export: Hubitat, Home Assistant (config files), some advanced setups. Most consumer apps do not.
The integration re-link
If integrations (Hue cloud, Ring, etc) appear broken after the update, re-link them. The app may have lost the OAuth tokens during update.
Go to integrations or linked services, disconnect, reconnect.
The device list re-sync
If devices are missing from the app after update, force a sync. Discovery, refresh, or remove-and-readd may restore them.
The home owner authority
If you are not the home owner (a household member), the owner’s account may have data that you cannot directly recover. Coordinate with the owner.
The routine details
If routines are partially restored (the triggers but not the actions), the action references may have lost their links. Edit each routine to re-establish the action targets.
The dashboard layout
Custom dashboard layouts are usually device-side. They may be reset by app updates.
Take screenshots of your dashboard layouts before any major app update. After update, recreate from the screenshots.
The notification settings
Notification preferences are sometimes reset by app updates. Verify after each update.
The widget configuration
Home screen widgets on iOS and Android may need to be removed and re-added after the underlying app updates. Some widget configurations are device-side and lost.
The bug versus feature
If the app update was a major redesign, some “loss” may be feature removal rather than data loss. The data may exist but the UI no longer presents it.
Check the app’s release notes for major feature changes.
Prevent future loss
Take screenshots of important configurations periodically. The screenshots become a reference if a future update loses data.
For especially important automations, document them in a notes app outside the smart home app. The documentation persists even if the app’s data is lost.
Hold updates
For critical smart home setups, you can disable auto-updates and apply updates manually after a delay. The delay gives the developer time to catch any update-introduced data loss.
iOS: Settings, App Store, App Downloads, disable Auto Downloads.
Android: Play Store, Settings, Network Preferences, Auto-update apps, never.
Manually update apps after checking forums for issues with the new version.
The export habit that survives platform changes
For apps that support export, schedule a monthly backup. The export file is small and stores easily in your notes or cloud storage. When the app loses its configuration, the export is your recovery path. Without one, you rebuild from memory.

The version-skip strategy for risky apps
If a smart home app has a history of update-breaks-config issues, skip the first point release of any major version. Let other users find the regressions. Update only after a few weeks of community feedback. The cost of being behind is small; the cost of being the canary is real. The cross-device sync test
If a config loss feels suspicious, sign into the app on a second phone and see whether the configuration is intact there.
