Some Echo models include a built-in Zigbee radio, which lets them act as a hub for compatible smart home devices. The convenience is real: you skip buying a separate hub, you skip yet another app, and your devices respond to voice commands instantly. The convenience also has limits that Amazon does not advertise. Before relying on an Echo as your only Zigbee hub, understand what it does and does not do.
Which Echo devices have a Zigbee radio
Not all of them. As of 2026, the following Echo devices include Zigbee:
- Echo (4th gen)
- Echo Plus (1st and 2nd gen)
- Echo Studio
- Echo Show 8 (3rd gen)
- Echo Show 10 (3rd gen)
- Echo Hub
Notable exceptions: the Echo Dot family does not include Zigbee. Older Echo Show models (1st gen) do not have it either. Always check the model number on the bottom or Amazon’s spec sheet before assuming your Echo has the radio.
What works well
Pairing is genuinely easy. Say “Alexa, discover devices” with a compatible Zigbee accessory in pairing mode and the Echo finds it within thirty seconds. Common accessories that pair reliably:
- Philips Hue bulbs without a Hue Bridge
- Sengled smart bulbs
- IKEA TRADFRI bulbs and outlets
- Innr lights
- Most generic Zigbee 3.0 plugs
Voice control of paired devices is fast because the path is short: phone to Alexa cloud to Echo to Zigbee device. No third-party hub adds latency.
What does not work well
The limits become visible once you try to scale up or do anything beyond on-off and brightness.
Battery devices: Echo’s Zigbee implementation does not officially support sleepy end devices like door sensors, motion sensors, or remote buttons. Some devices appear to pair but stop responding within a few hours. If you need battery sensors, you need a real Zigbee coordinator (Hue Bridge, SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant with a coordinator stick).
Mesh routing: The Echo will route through other Echos in your home if they are also Zigbee capable, but the mesh is not as robust as a purpose-built coordinator. You will see drops on devices at the edges of the home that would be stable with a dedicated hub.
Device limit: Amazon does not publish a hard number, but practical limit before performance degrades is about twenty-five Zigbee devices per Echo. Beyond that you see slower response times and occasional commands that simply do not arrive.
Advanced groups: Zigbee binding and group control (where multiple devices receive a single command and respond simultaneously) does not work properly. You see staggered responses, which is fine for some scenarios and annoying for others (every bulb in the kitchen going on a half-second apart).
Local control: All commands still go through the Alexa cloud. If your internet is down, your Zigbee devices on the Echo will not respond, even though the Echo and the bulb are six feet apart.
When the Echo hub model makes sense
Use the Echo as your Zigbee hub when:
- You have fewer than twenty smart bulbs and plugs, all mains-powered
- You do not need motion or door sensors on Zigbee
- You are happy controlling everything through Alexa
- You do not need automations to run when the internet is down
For these users, the convenience is hard to beat and the cost is minimal because you would have bought the Echo anyway.
When to add a proper hub
Move to a proper Zigbee hub when:
- You add any battery-powered sensors
- You cross twenty-five devices
- You want safety-critical automations (smoke alarm reaction, leak detection)
- You want local control during internet outages
- You want to use a non-Alexa ecosystem in parallel
The Hue Bridge is the easiest upgrade for a user already deep in Hue. Hubitat or Home Assistant are the right answers for users who want a full hub experience.
Migrating devices off the Echo
You cannot directly transfer Zigbee pairings from an Echo to another hub. Each device has to be factory reset and re-paired. The process is the same as initial setup: put the device in pairing mode, exclude or remove it from Alexa, then include it on the new hub.
Plan for about five minutes per device, including the inevitable retry when the first pairing attempt fails. A migration of twenty devices is an evening of work.
What about Matter on the Echo?
Current Echo devices also act as Matter controllers, separate from the Zigbee radio. Matter does not have the same limitations as Echo’s Zigbee. If you are buying new accessories today and they support Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread, prefer those because they work with any Matter controller and they sidestep the Echo’s Zigbee weaknesses.
The honest scaling threshold
Users who start with an Echo as their Zigbee hub almost always outgrow it within a year. The trajectory is predictable: a few bulbs and plugs work great, then you add a motion sensor (which Echo handles poorly), then a door sensor, then a battery temperature sensor. By the time you have eight devices including any battery-powered ones, the Echo’s Zigbee limits start surfacing as random offline events.

The data-rate ceiling people hit
Beyond about 15 active Zigbee devices on an Echo, you start noticing slower response times and occasional missed commands. The Echo’s Zigbee implementation throttles internal message handling to avoid overwhelming the radio. The threshold is not advertised but is consistent across user reports.
