Important context about how to use our guides, and the limits of what we can promise.

Fixynest publishes troubleshooting guides for consumer smart home devices. This page describes the limits of what we can and cannot guarantee.

Our guides describe what worked for us

Every guide on this site is based on a real reproduction of the problem on equipment we own or have access to. The fix we publish is the fix that worked for us, on the firmware version available at the time we tested. Smart home platforms change frequently. A guide that worked perfectly six months ago may not match what you see in your app today.

We make a best effort to keep guides current. We re-test popular guides quarterly and update them. If you see a guide that no longer matches reality, send a correction to the email on our contact page.

You are responsible for your own home

Some of our guides describe steps that involve resetting devices, removing them from one ecosystem and adding them to another, changing router configuration, modifying firewall rules, creating or editing VLANs, and similar actions. These actions can have side effects. A reset wipes the device’s settings. A factory reset on a smart lock can lock you out temporarily. A VLAN change can take down your entire network if done incorrectly.

Read the full guide before you start. Understand each step. If a step makes you uncertain, stop and find a second source. We accept no responsibility for damage to your devices, your network, or your home, however caused, that results from following our guides.

Safety-critical devices

If a smart home device is responsible for safety in your home, including smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, security alarms, smart locks on exterior doors, water shutoff valves, garage door controllers, and similar gear, we strongly recommend you do not rely solely on smart features. Keep a non-smart backup, test the device on the manufacturer’s recommended schedule, and consult the manufacturer for the authoritative guidance on installation and maintenance.

Nothing on Fixynest constitutes professional electrical, networking, or security advice. For installations involving mains wiring, gas appliances, or alarm systems that affect insurance coverage, hire a licensed professional in your jurisdiction.
